When we were looking for a plot (now 16 years ago) our dream was to find a piece of paradise with mountains at the back, the sea in the front, a stream running through the garden and a hot spring. Being situated at the edge of a nature reserve without a fence at the back garden is so very, very nice. The feeling of open space, yet comfy ambience, is something all guests comment on as being so special. The house is unique by its flow of energy and functionality in relation within its natural environment. The patio arches allow the winter sun to enter and warm up the house, whilst keeping them out in summer. The house is a solid traditional clay brick building, plastered and painted in the natural colours of the surrounding rocks. The plumbing and electricity are built on European standards. All cupboards and most furniture are hand made and painted by the artists. The house offers uninterrupted 360 degree panoramic views on False Bay and the surrounding mountains, Helderberg, Hottentots Holland and Kogelberg even including Table Mountain. Cocagne Earth Lodge is a beautifully designed, handcrafted eco-friendly and earthy home with 360-degree, uninterrupted mountain and sea views. We call it our 'Out of Africa' home because the design is inspired by our many travels through Africa. The main living area is very open (from 3 m high to double volume) with 5 m wide concertina doors opening up completely to create a wonderful open flow between the lounge and the patio area. Positioned to shelter you from the summer south-easter wind, this outdoors area of the house is ideal for entertaining, complete with a large solar-heated swimming pool (gated, for family safety), a built-in covered braai area, a herb garden, and even a traditional clay pizza oven! The top floor overlooks the living area, has an expansive terrace and uninterrupted views over False Bay, the Helderberg wine valley and Kogelberg Biosphere. Its open mezzanine is ideal for reading and games, has a small fireplace and is toddler-proof. The main bedroom contains a super-king-size bed and has an en-suite bathroom with a bath, shower and bidet. It leads directly onto the terrace and has sea and mountain views. The house has 2 separate self-catering studios, which are occupied year round by long-term tenants (one of whom is a registered tour guide if you need one and the other one, a very discrete elder woman). There are also 2 beautiful, big dogs (German Shepherd x wolf) and 2 adventurous cats who live on the property and are fed by one of the tenants.
