Marcus Smit Jacobs Architects is a medium sized firm, consisting of registered architects, architectural technologists and administrative staff. The firm was established in 1996 by Marcus Smit, who has since been actively involved in all aspects of the practice. The firm is registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession, The South African Institute for Architects and The Cape Institute for Architecture, having been acknowledged with an Award for Excellence by the latter. The practice has been involved in projects across the building spectrum including refurbishments, alterations and interior projects, with an emphasis on the luxury residential market. A personal service from conception to finished product and a careful attention to detail is part of our work ethic. Additional services include choosing and design of interior fittings and furniture as well as garden layouts. This ensures a coherence between building interior and exterior, as well as a desired integration of buildings and their environments. Some ideas incorporated in our work have grown with us over time and have become familiar, while others emerge as new from a creative response to an ongoing dialogue between informing factors. These include the landscape or urban context, the site and its location, climate, orientation, views, environmental sensitivities as well as the universal social and architectural debate. A combination of the above, a strong focus on client requirements and aspirations and a general attempt to relate functional requirements to form, can be seen as the basis of our design approach.
